Here at Tulcan, we call ourselves a family operating investment partnership. Since we originated the term, we thought we’d take a minute to explain what that is, how we arrived at it, and what it means for the people and businesses we work with.
After years of experience in the industry, we’ve found that, actually, those of us on the equity side are largely irrelevant–it’s the men and women putting in the labor and producing the products that matter. And the measuring stick for our success should be the extent to which we ensure every single worker has the best opportunity to excel and succeed.
So when we talk about a partnership, we mean coming alongside a business to grow it and bringing more value to the table than just investing dollars. At the same time, we empower business owners to be the “operators,” because we recognize that they are the experts in what they do.
Instead of buying-and-flipping, at Tulcan we want to buy-and-hold. In fact, in an ideal world, we would never have to exit a company we’ve bought.
